そしてやってきた、発表の日。私自身5回目の、しかし英語では初めての学会発表です。結局、この前の夜は発表内容を確認していたりして、よく眠れませんでした。前日と同じコースで同じ距離を走りましたが、前日よりも少しだけペースが遅かったです。

午前8時に、学会会場のMelbourne Exhibition and Convention Centerに到着。この学会は、子宮内膜症の国際会議（研究報告会）です。学会は、医師が治療法の工夫をレポートしたりするClinical sympothiumと、子宮内膜症の病態を解析し、新しい治療法を見出していこうとする基礎研究をレポートするScientific sympothiumとに分かれていました。まず、8時半に始まったScientific sympothiumに参加しました。しかし、私はすぐにその場を出ました。
そして、前日に発表ポスターを貼った場所に行き、プレゼンの最後の準備をしました。私のプレゼンに与えられた時間は、10時半から11時のポスター審査時間のうちのわずか5分。理科大での、学部卒業研究のポスター発表と同じですね。私は小声での発表練習を、何度か繰り返しました。そして、シンポジウムの場に戻りました。
10時45分ごろ、2人の審査員が私のところに来ました。2人はそれぞれ、この国際会議の主催者であるオーストラリア婦人科内視鏡学会 (AGES) と国際子宮内膜症学会 (WES) の先生でした。
小声で練習していたときは、うまく話せていたつもりでした。しかし、審査員とその周りの聴衆の前で話すときは、同じようにはいきませんでした。プレゼンしながら、十分な音量で話すことは小声とは要領が違うことに気づき、また悔しくも思いました。審査員からの質問に対する答えるときも、言いたいことを言えずにもどかしい感じで、適切に答えられた自信も持てませんでした。それでも、この日の自分にできるだけのことをできたと思います。
1つめの写真は、学会会場の大ホール。私はポスター発表でしたので、この壇上で発表したわけではありません。
ポスター掲示の場所が近かった方に、アルゼンチンからいらしたAugstin博士がいらっしゃいました。博士はいろいろな話を聞かせてくれ、意気投合して一緒に写真まで撮ってくれました。
今日の学会は、午後6時半に終わりました。ティータイム、ランチタイム、そして学会後のワイン＆チーズを交えた懇親会と、学会の1日目を学術的な交流以外にも楽しみました。学会はあと2日間、計3日間続きます。
これがメルボルン市街を走るトラム。このエンジ色の車両はクラシックなもので、"City Circle" という誰もが無料で乗れるトラムです。

I didn't sleep very well last night, so I felt tired a little this morning. My running pace was a little slower than that of the previous day.
We reached the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Center, where the World Congress of Endometriosis 2008 was held, at 8:00 a.m. this day. I started listening to a scientific sympothium from 8:30, but exit this sympothium after the first presentation.
I went to the board set our poster on the previous day to prepare finally for my presentation. The provided times for my presentation was only five minutes in one of the sections of the poster judging time, 10:30-11:00. I practiced to speak in English several times with a small voice. After practicing, I went back to listen to the sympothium again.
At 10:45 a.m., two judgemen found me as the presentor of my poster. They must belong to the owner societies of the World Congress, the Australian Gynecological Endoscopy Society (AGES) and the World Endometriosis Society (WES).
I could speak when practicing with a small voice, but could not present to the judgemen and other audiences well. I felt and regreted that speaking English loudly was not similar to speaking it with a small voice at all. When answering to the questions from the judgemen, I was most impatient and had no confidence that the answers I told them were appropriate. However, I had done what I could do this time. Thus my fifth public presentation but first in English was completed.
Today's congress finished over 6:30 p.m. We learned a lot and had a fun through a teatime, a lunchtime, and a wine & cheese reception in the hall. I became friends with an
Argentina, Dr. Augstin. He told me a lot of things and took a picture with me!
This congress continued for three days until Friday.
