I am bitterly disappointed about today's discussion in a forum in "Nanotoxicology 2012".

I'm staying Beijing (China) for attending the 6th Int'l Conference on Nanotoxicology (Sep 4-7, 2012). The conference has started this evening with "Good Research Publication Forum" by direct communication with editors of academic journals related to biomedicine and toxicology of nanomaterials.
In this forum, the participants discussed how our manuscripts are reviewed and published, but did not mention WHAT FOR our manuscripts should be published at all.
I want scientists (in the field) to revisit what for we publish our paper in any academic journals.
What's the aim of publishing papers for each academic journal?

今日から、国際学会 "Nanotoxicology 2012" に参加するために北京に来ています。第1日目の今日は夕方から始まり、「良い論文を出版するためのフォーラム」が行われました。
失望しました。
それは、このフォーラムでの議論がいかにして論文を学術誌に掲載させるかという内容に終始し、何のためにこれを掲載させるのかということへの言及がまったくなかったからです。そんな言葉を挟む余地すらなかったです。（これを挟めなかったのは、私の弱さでもありますが・・・）
こんな姿勢で、科学、academic scienceが価値を持ち続けられるのか、という疑問すら湧いてました。（というのは、言い過ぎかもしれないとも思いますが・・・）
それでも、今回の学会の大会長である座長は“very importantな議論が行われた”と総括。論文がどのように査読され、出版されるかという技術的な問題が、そんなに重要なことでしょうか。「何のために」ではなく？
明日以降、少しでも「何のために」を掘り下げようと思います。
